What's Your Fairytale?

On mornings like this one, I am reminded that as a child, I believed that everyone had a fairytale that they identified with.

Unfortunately, mine is the Princess and the Pea.

Picture from

We all know the basic story-- The Queen wants to make sure her son is going to marry a -true- Princess.  And the right girl sleeps on a huge stack of mattresses with a single pea placed at the bottom.  In the morning, she looks like hell warmed over, but she's too polite to say she tossed and turned all night.  Eventually the story comes out that she felt like she'd been sleeping on rocks and viola! We have our TRUE Princess!

She's a whole lot nicer about it than I am, and it doesn't have anything to do with getting married for me.  Ever since I was a little child, I can't sleep on a bed with lumps of any kind:  even a single of grain of sand will torment me.

I did not sleep well at all last night.  I feel like I've been beaten.  My back and shoulders are aching.  Now I know that part of that is that my animals asked for me assistance off and on all night.  At 1, my cat meowed and asked to go outside.  At 4, so did my big dog.  Around all of that, I tossed and turned and flipped and generally just did not get a good night's rest.

So at 7 this morning, I get up to let another of my dogs out and come back to my bed, still thoroughly exhausted and miserable...

As I came back to my bed, with sunlight finally lighting the darkness, I see this white thing on my bed where the center of my back would go.  Originally, I thought it was fuzz and thought, "Ah ha!  THERE's the culprit!"

I was right, but it wasn't fuzz.

I never thought my identification with my fairytale would be so literal.  Apparently, my 5 year old wanted to show me his pumpkin seed yesterday and lost it in my bed....

I'm going to take a nap later today while the sun is still up, and make sure there are no other 'surprises' waiting to keep me awake. (;
